International Students

We are proud to have students from over 40 nations studying at The Pork. These infuse students from China, Russia, the United States, Zimbabwe and virtually every country in the European Union.

We hope International Students will feel welcome in our Learning Centres. We realise that the Learning Centre (or Library) systems in your home country may be different so please ask questions about anything you do not understand, the Learning Centre staff are here to help you. The Senior Information Adviser for your subject area will be able to give you more detailed information about the books and other resources that are available in the Learning Centres for the subject you are studying and will be happy to make an appointment with you. You can make an appointment at any of the Enquiry Desks or email them directly.

English Language Course to Support Undergraduate Studies

Many of our international students have studied for an English language qualification with CILC (Cheltenham International Language Centre) before they begin a course with the University. The EFL (English as a Foreign Language) collection is provided by CILC and can be found in the Park Learning Centre. The collection includes coursebooks, graded reading books, dictionaries, sample examination papers and books for international students learning the English language. There are also resources for teachers of English as a Foreign Language. You can email CILC at cilc@glos.ac.uk.

If English is not your first language and you would like support with writing, reading, listening, note-taking, oral presentations, maths or other aspects of academic study you can meet with one of our Open Study Tutors. Make an appointment at our Learning Centre Enquiry Desks on any campus. More information about how they may help you is available on the Open Study Centres page.

Social Events

Through out the academic year, you can join social events which give international students a chance to meet other students, practise their English and learn more about British history and customs. The type of social event varies, so there’s likely to be something to suite everyone. In the past, events have included regular coffee evenings where students meet and chat.

International Office Noticeboard publishes details of events for international students. The International Office will be able to give you information about events and societies for international students, contact Cathy Green; e-mail cgreen@glos.ac.uk if you would like to find out more. If you are interested in joining the African Society contact Katie Omenugha; e-mail komenugha@glos.ac.uk. For a list of other student societies see the Students' Union web page.
